Welcoming Mary Lawton, a Houston based Six Chix

The newest cartoonist on our roster of “Six Chix”, Mary Lawton, started a couple of weeks ago, replacing Anne Gibbons. Anne will be focusing on other projects, and we will keep you posted about that.  Mary Lawton, who is based in Houston, Texas, has a great “Six Chix” cartoon today about pedicures. But I also came across her contribution to graphic journalism in a piece she did for The New Yorker recently https://www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/houston-stands-up-to-harvey.

(Might need to cut and paste link to The New Yorker.)

Here’s what Mary had to say about the volunteers helping out after the damage from hurricane Harvey:

“It’s madness here, a crisis around every corner, but thousands of people are helping everywhere.  I just learned today that a giant truck filled with 500 huge buckets that contain cleaning supplies in each, is headed this way from Maryland.  We are getting 100 of them dropped at the church where I’ve been helping out.  So I guess it doesn’t matter where you live, you can do enormous good for the victims.”
With everything terrible that is in the news these days, it is truly heartening to see someone like Mary Lawton lending her talent and her time to help others.

PAINTINGS from Old Family Photos & CARTOONS for Today’s Crazy World

An Exhibit of Work by Anne Gibbons

As a cartoonist, the point is to find the simplest way to get to the point. It’s been an interesting journey for me to explore painting, where a circuitous route more interesting, and I’m not even sure there’s a point to speak of. I found myself drawn to painting a series of family photos because they were so interesting to look at, so evocative of the world I grew up in.

Here are a few photos and samples from my show at An Beal Bocht, a wonderful Irish pub in Riverdale. The paintings and cartoons are on exhibit for the month of April.
